Death had conquered every king. Until it met Jesus.
In Day 9 of our Ascension to Pentecost series, Peter stands before the crowd gathered at Pentecost and interprets what they've just witnessed. His sermon moves through Joel, through David, and through the story of Jesus โ building the case that the Spirit's outpouring is proof that a new king has taken the throne.
Peter traces the signs: Jesus' healings, the darkness at the crucifixion, the empty tomb. God's long-promised king had come. And when Jesus descended into the grave, death itself was outmatched. He rose, ascended to God's right hand, and was enthroned above every power. The Spirit comes because the king is on his throne.
But then Peter names the unbearable truth. The people standing in front of him had handed Jesus over to be killed. The crucifixion was humanity's rebellion at its worst โ the ultimate rejection of God's king.
And God's response was mercy.
On the very day he pours out his Spirit, God offers forgiveness to the people who killed his Son โ inviting them out of defeated kingdoms and into the reign of Jesus.
Peter's sermon isn't just an explanation. It's a royal summons.
