One seat is empty. And it matters more than you might expect.
In Day 5 of our Ascension to Pentecost series, 120 disciples are gathered โ ten twelves, waiting ten days to be filled. Among them are the eleven remaining apostles. But one seat sits vacant. Judas, the betrayer, is gone.
Peter stands and names the loss โ then reads it through the Psalms. Scripture speaks of a place left vacant when an enemy is defeated, and of that office being given to another. The enemy does not keep the seat forever.
But this is bigger than one betrayer. It's the shape of the whole story. In the beginning, humanity fell under an enemy's dominion. In Jesus, that dominion has been broken. And now God is filling what's empty, restoring what was stolen, taking back what was lost.
Matthias is chosen by lot โ just as God once apportioned Israel's inheritance. Because only the king assigns seats in his kingdom.
We don't wait alone.
