Did Caravaggio hide a GIANT eye in plain sight? 👁️
Narcissus was so obsessed with his own beauty that he literally starved to death. But legendary painter Caravaggio didn't just paint a man at a pool—he painted the "organ of vice" itself.
The Hidden Composition
• The Shape: Look at the overall composition. The curve of Narcissus’s back meeting his reflection creates a perfect oval.
• The Iris: The brightest, most saturated spot in the entire painting is his green knee. Positioned right in the center, it acts as the iris of a massive, staring eye.
• The Message: Caravaggio is showing us that Narcissus is trapped inside his own vision.
A Glimpse of Death
Notice the reflection. It isn't a perfect mirror image—it’s darker, distorted, and skeletal. Caravaggio is foreshadowing Narcissus’s fate. Look closely at his left hand; it’s already breaking the surface, dipping into the "death" of the reflection.
He wasn't just looking at water—he was stepping into his own grave. 🎨💀
