Doug Wilson Claims C.S. Lewis Was a Calvinist — Here's Why He's Wrong
Doug Wilson says C.S. Lewis was a Calvinist. But when you actually examine the argument, it collapses.
Here's the full breakdown.
Doug Wilson is one of Reformed theology's most influential voices — but his case for C.S. Lewis as a Calvinist reveals a critical flaw in how Calvinist apologists read other thinkers: they broaden their definitions until almost any Christian can be labeled "Reformed."
In this video, I walk through Wilson's "Narnian Tulip Garden" argument point by point — examining his use of Eustace's transformation in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to support Total Depravity, his own admission that his "Narnian tulips" had to be stretched to fit Lewis's words, and his caricature of Arminianism as "He loves me, He loves me not."
The problem? None of the concepts Wilson pulls from Narnia are uniquely Calvinistic. Every Arminian, Provisionist, and early church father has always believed humans cannot save themselves — that's not TULIP, that's just Christianity.
What Wilson is doing is called eisegesis: reading your theological system into a text instead of drawing meaning out of it. And C.S. Lewis himself explicitly rejected Total Depravity.
If you've ever been told "C.S. Lewis was basically a Calvinist," this video gives you the tools to push back — grounded in Lewis's own words.
