Jesus's Definition of Eternal Life in John 17: Most notably, John 17 is the only chapter in the entire KJV Bible in which eternal life is revealed in 16 words: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." (John 17:3) Jesus Focused on the World in John 17: Much focus is on escaping the World. But in John 17, Jesus does not mention heaven one time. However, Jesus mentions "World" 19 times in John 17, highlighting the importance of restoration over relocation. Jesus said this in John 17:15; "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil." Jesus designated His followers to be "the light of the world." (Matt. 5:14) In (John 8:12) Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Jesus's Truth on Sanctification in John 17: "TRUTH" is the golden thread binding Jesus and God with the followers of Jesus: "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." (John 17:17) To be "sanctified" means to be set apart for a holy purpose. In the context of John 17, it’s knowing the only True God and Jesus Christ whom God sent. In (John 4:24) Jesus says: "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." In a world filled with evil deception and lies, the Truth is the only anchor that connects our spirit with God’s Spirit of Truth, so we can be guided in all truth. Jesus confirmed that in (John 16:13) saying: "When He, the SPIRIT of TRUTH, is come, He will guide you into all TRUTH." Jesus’s Call for Oneness with His Followers in John 17: Near the end of John 17, in verses 11, 21, 22, 23, and 24, Jesus asks God five times to make "His followers" perfect in one with God and Jesus saying: “I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” (John 17:23) This isn’t a plea for organizational unity, but is a supernatural oneness by the merging of God’s Spirit of Truth with our spirit. According to Jesus, the unity in God’s Spirit and Truth, is the ultimate "proof" to the world that God sent Jesus to the world. At some point in the future, the prophecy of Jesus must be fulfilled because, "my words shall not pass away.” (Matthew. 24:35) Conclusion In John 17, Jesus provides capstone truths for His followers both then in 33 AD, in 2026, and beyond. According to God and Jesus, the “Goal” is that “YOU” know what eternal life truly is! How can you hope to have eternal life if “YOU” don’t know what Eternal life is?
